Summary
This is the re-issue of the 1952 edition, which has been in constant demand over the intervening years. 'Australia', says the author, 'is the small house. Ownership of one is an inevitable and unquestionable a goal of the average Australian as marriage.' The book is the story of the occupiers. Australia has more of them per head of population than other nations, and has maintained a higher standard of living in them. Collectively, they are an outstanding achievement; but individually they have been prey to thoughtless habits and fickle fancies. The author summarises his story, from 1788 to the present day, as 'a material triumph and an aesthetic calamity'. Readers will thoroughly enjoy the combination of informative detail and quiet humour, and the architectural features of a house, a street, or a suburb, which have hitherto simply been 'different', will gain an added significance and interest.
