Summary The development and character of Russian art, the situation of the visual artist in the USSR today, the meaning of revolutionary art and many other vital topics are explored and discussed in this new book by the author of Success and Failure of Picasso. The struggle to emancipate the visual arts in the USSR is epitomised by the sculptor Neizvestny, a legendary figure among the younger artists, poets, students and intellectuals. It is virtually impossible for a Soviet sculptor to work independently, but despite eery pressure brought to bear, Neizvestny has resisted - as his sculptures testify - and refused to conform.
